And the Hunky Jesus winner is . . . Baby Jesus

baby2_hunky_jesus.JPG

Like Folsom Street Fair, the Hunky Jesus and WTF Mary contest marks the SF spiritual calendar of fantasy, spectacle and the sublime. This was the 36th annual contest and my first HJ in many years since I’ve been living in Tokyo.

I like how each Jesus created their own storyline, often independent of the Christian chronology. A 9 month pregnant woman won WTF Mary. “Good timing on her part,” as my friend said. Baby Jesus, “I’m just a baby,” won the HJ category. His is probably the sexiest adult diaper I have ever seen, and he won a lot of attention by pouring milk from his baby bottle across his hairy chest.

Thanks, Sister Roma, and all the good nuns for an outstanding event that brought together freaks, families, and pure joy.

Lumine Shinjuku displays robot with giant bulging crotch

Has anyone else been on the East Side of the JR Shinjuku station? Lumine has this incredibly obscene robot with a giant, bulging crotch. I love how there are always people snapping photos. I am unclear what the commercial goal of this display is, but it is certainly obscene.

Notice in the reflection, below, this new lamb-inspired fall fashion: matching white furry vest and leg warmers. Nice!

Thanks, Tokyo Matt, for showing me this commercial spectacle.

Strange visitors in Kyoto

Uncle and neices at Kinkakuji

One of the pleasure of travel is not only the sites but seeing the other site-seers. In Kyoto, I could not resist taking photos of these two spectacles that nearly over-shadowed the historic sites.

Above at Kinkakuji, the Golden Pavillion made famous in the West by Mishima, my mother and I spotted this “uncle and neices” three-some. The unusually warm weather in December does not sufficiently explain the brevity of these skirts. My husband charitably claims that three-piece-suited gentleman could be the young ladies’ relative, although I suspect most ojisan in Japan or elsewhere would not enjoy escorting their siblings’ children in these outfits. On the other hand, if they are not relatives, what an odd choice of date location, no?

Below at Katsura Villa, this over-sized personality demanded the attentions and photo-capturing assistance of fellow tourists, tour guide, and even the gardeners. So demanding that we witnessed some fellow tour-goers loudly “excusing” themselves for getting in her way, and much eye-rolling from the Japanese tourists. I wonder if she used to be a show-girl. I was certainly captivated.
