The husband took one look at this photo, and declared yakuza. I like the traditional kimono, the fedora, and the over-sized kumade rake. This gent seems to be preening for attention no less ardently than the male hosts.
The husband and I spent most of February in San Francisco. It was great to see friends and to spend time in my garden. I love how this fern in the winter has new leaves that are red. Seeing my San Francisco garden has given me inspiration for re-making the in-laws small shady garden in Tokyo.
Shu reminded me this week that Japanese has no equivalent expression to “it smells fishy.” From actual fish to metaphorical shadyness, smelling fishy is always bad in English. In Japan, it means breakfast, lunch or dinner is ready!
