Who’s your favorite Olympic athlete?

Who’s your favorite Olympic athlete? In terms of sexyness, Apolo Anton Ohno is one of my favorites. Shouldn’t nude posing be compulsory? I, of course, loved the theatricality of the opening ceremonies (costumes, sets, so many white peeps).

And now I am looking forward to tight lycra, sequins, and the outre fashions of Japanese bad boy athletes. Yes, that’s you, snowboarder Kazuhiro Kokubo, barred from the opening ceremony because you’re too cool for skool!

JR Characters (1 of 3)

JR Nakano station is always a people-watching pleasure. Less self-conscious than Harajuku and less desperate than Shibuya, Nakano’s station attracts the hip, the funky, and the downright strange. This is the first in a 3 part series of JR characters.

I love how nonchalant is this lady wearing a sparkly pink top, fluorescent blue skirt, several handbags, and a hat that will not stop. Japanese are so polite that no one stared, and I was the only one who immediately pulled out my camera.

The hat is a marvelous creation. Perched on top of the main quilted, multi-patterned hat, which nearly obscures her (?) face, there is a blue sequin mini-hat, pink butterfly wings, many feathers, a stuffed lady bug, and an over-sized candy inside a rolled up wrapper.

What other objects do you think would go with this hat?

Boy bands at suburban festival

Boy bands at suburban festival

At a large suburban festival, we saw *three* booths involving boy bands. My favorite was the one above which involved a rifle shooting game, with the boy band images as either prizes or encouragements. This older guy looks ready to teach the kids how to shoot to kill. The guy running the game was kind of an ikemen, with his fried hair piled into a glitter sequin watch cap.

Below two booths sold boy band imagery. Interestingly, in Japan, there is no equivalent girl band objects. I guess Japanese (male loving) women are just lucky in that respect. I also suspect that the imagery objectifying women is perhaps too dirty to be shown in public at a festival.

And still more. Plus there was a Korean store full of Korean bands and idols.
