In a story about over-crowding in Latin American prisons, the New York Times also serves up image after image of attractive men and their extravagant tattoos. Does this reinforce the call for sympathy?
After a campaign promising an “equal relationship” with the US and then nearly a year of delays, Japan’s prime minister Hatoyama announced he will now adhere to an old agreement to relocate the US Marine base within Okinawa. There’s a lot of excuses about the dangers of North Korea, but in the end, it seems clear that Hatoyama is simply Hilary’s bitch.
The husband thinks this expression “Hillary’s bitch” is too redolent of prison sex. But I am just calling it like I see it. Poor occupied Japan and its spineless leaders. At least it’s nice to think that the tyrant top is mistress Hillary.

One of the strangest features of nearly all Japanese middle class apartments are their doors– typically metal, short and oddly un-residential to my eyes. These doors define residential living here, along with hallways that are open to the elements, and endless rows of symmetrical fluorescent hall and stairwell lighting visible from the streets.
I was reminded of this when my American artist friend who lives in Beijing and is in Japan for a 2 month artist residency told me about her strange Yokohama apartment door. She didn’t realize how typical and pervasive this door is.
What do you think it looks like? Sometimes I feel like it’s a prison, a submarine, an industrial farm. More recently, these doors seem normal and unremarkable.
