It’s amazing that bowling is still going strong in Tokyo. Look at these great balls. This Takadanobaba spot has 40 or 50 lanes. The attendant was also good looking.

Food trucks accompany the Tokyo farmers markets. I *love* these neon green boots, adding an 80s twist to a classic psychedelic look.

Somewhat related, I wonder if this will be the summer that I buy and wear my first lady handbag for men. The husband would die of embarrassment, but many many Tokyo men rock the lady handbag look.

I am loving the mixed patterns and many layered look of this florist at the United Nations University farmers market. In addition to nutritious fresh produce, there’s a lot to see.
Two belts and a blue jacket in a sea of grey
I like how this very gay look, the blue motorcycle jacket, stands out in a sea of grey at an intersection in Yoyogi. The hand in the back pocket brings attention to the two belts. That’s a lot of decoration!
Guarding imperial grounds, and looking sharp
I wonder if this guard is trained to defend the imperial grounds, or to simply look good in a suit? Those eyebrows are sharp enough to cut a winter tomato.
Construction worker fashion
Yesterday was the 3 month anniversary of the Tohoku earthquake/tsunami/nuclear disaster. No better time than now to look closely again at one of my favorite Japanese male fashions: gatenki (ガテんキ). As J-son noticed immediately on his first visit, gatenki combine making-stuff masculinity with super baggy pants that are vaguely Yoji Yamamoto in styling.
On weekdays I escape the tedium of rote learning for a balcony break overlooking a construction site for a 20-some story office building. It’s fun to watch the cranes, steel, and heavy equipment, but even more sublime when my break time coincides with theirs.
I feel safer and intrigued by daily sightings of these ninja-like male fashion icons.
Japanese teens hiding behind face masks
A British news story purports that teens are hiding behind face masks “in order to retreat from society.” Blame is predictably cast on the economy and “social insecurities.” My favorite is the quote from the teen who claims to only take off his mask after running practice: “All I can say is that it somehow calms me down.”
My advice to anyone who wants “to look Japanese,” wear a face mask!
