Fashion conundrum #3: How to process this Koenji youth style?

IMG_0296

This outfit almost make me lose my mind. The bottom is fairly standard, neon tennis shoes with wings. Above that are stockings that scream Rocky Horror Picture show. The shorts and matching top look like someone robbed grandma’s couch. And there’s so much more. I have to thank this kid for confusing me completely.

Anti-Christ spotted in Koenji with SanTanuki

SONY DSC

Underneath a “Wild Layers” wig, in “bitter cinnamon blend” color, a person claiming to be the Anti-Christ was spotted in Koenji. It was Friday, Dec 21, 2012, and the world might have ended that very day according to Mayan prophecy. Instead, he shared a fish sausage with SanTanuki and a sad smile with a restaurant worker after a delicious bowl of Vietnamese soup.

Police pair outside Bluebird hair salon

Even crazy hail does not deter me from a Tokyo anti-nuke demo. Over the next week, I’ll be posting my bonus entertainment from the serious energy issues: admiring a wide variety of uniformed police. There must have been hundreds of uniformed officers on duty, doing nothing.

My favorite of all was this synchronized pair, securing the Bluebird hair salon with the power of their ear pieces. It must be nice to work with a buddy.

Naked guy encourages booze buying at Koenji’s Awa Odori

Just over a week ago, Koenji had its fantastic Awa Odori festival, and I took many photos of participants, food & booze sellers, & other attendees. I’m going to post them over a few posts and a few days.

This barely legal guy literally has the price of beer scrawled across his naked back. I love the very DIY, un-hemmed red fundoshi he’s sporting, and the brazenness of his pitch. Check out below where this customer is juggling his cigarette, man-bag, and wallet to get boozed up as quickly as possible. This is Japan when it’s not working.

Sexy acrobat in Koenji

This past weekend Koenji hosted a street fair with dozens of performances happening outside the station and along the shopping streets. It’s called Bikkuri Daidogei, or Surprising Street Performance Festival. Since it was a performance, I took the opportunity to admire this sexy acrobat. The neediness of street performers, craving public attention, certainly draws me in. Plus, I love creative makeup.
